Performances begin at 8PM
Performed in repertory for 8 continuous weeks
MEASURE FOR MEASURE
Directed by David Esbjornson
July 22, 23, 28, 29, 30
Measure sweeps from the corridors of national power to the intimate confines of the bedroom and from the convent's chapel to the executioner's block. It is Shakespeare at his grittiest: a bracing and bawdy glimpse of what happens when those in power allow their basest human impulses to range unchecked.
Midsummer Night's Dream in NYC*

THE CELL and THE HIVE THEATRE COMPANY Present A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
JULY 5 – 31, AT THE CELL THEATER TICKETS ON SALE NOW AT BROWNPAPERTICKETS.COM
THE CELL and THE HIVE THEATRE COMPANY are pleased to announce their gender-bender production of William Shakespeare’s A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, directed by Matthew A.J. Gregory. A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM will play a limited engagement at the cell (338 West 23rd Street New York, NY 10011). MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM will be playing in rep with BAD EVIDENCE, as part of the cell’s Summer of Lust. Performances continue through Sunday, July 31. The Hive and the cell have joined forces to present a modern re-imagining of Shakespeare’s classic, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, which casts Hermia and Lysander as lesbian lovers with Demetrius and Helena as a gay couple. This is not your grandmother’s MIDSUMMER, but a MIDSUMMER for 21st century NYC. This production exposes contemporary America's sexual hang-ups and resistance to gay marriage. Concepts of what constitutes gender, sexual-orientation and power will be explored and exploded!
MIDSUMMER, the inaugural performance of Shakespeare in the Rear @ the cell, has audiences follow Shakespeare’s lost lovers in and out of doors as they make their way through an urban wilderness. From the cell’s magnificent townhouse interior to its brand new outdoor garden salon, we join the lovers as they journey from a lavish if oppressive high-society gala to a wild outdoor bacchanal of every fetish imaginable--filled with delectable and dangerous fairies straight out of everyone’s fantasies and fears.
A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM plays the following schedule through Sunday, July 31:
July 5, 6, 9, 14, 15, 17, 19, 20, 23, 28, 29 and 31 at 8pm July 10, 16, 24 and 30 at 2pm

CARAMOOR JAZZ FESTIVAL
Aug. 5-7, 2011
Since its birth nearly two decades ago, the Caramoor International Jazz Festival has become one of the country’s premiere destinations for this music—jazz artists and fans alike. 2011 is no exception. Jazz Producer Jim Luce has crafted a three-day festival packed with jazz legends and innovative voices on the international scene demonstrating the breadth and diversity of the state of jazz.
Last summer, she knocked everyone out in Bobby Hutcherson’s Quartet. This summer, pianist Renee Rosnes returns with her own superlative quartet (Steve Nelson, Peter Washington, and Lewis Nash) to kick off the 2011 Jazz Festival with an inspired and elegant evening in the intimate Spanish Courtyard.
Virtuoso bassist Christian McBride brings his Big Band to heat up the Venetian Theater as Saturday’s headliner and to show us why this propulsive large ensemble is one of the hottest groups on the scene. Guitarist Juan Carlos Formell and his quartet Johnny’s Dream Club begin the afternoon by conjuring the sounds of late-‘40s Havana—rhapsodic yet sizzling. Joshua Redman’s latest project—James Farm—brings together pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Matt Penman, and drummer Eric Harland for a truly collaborative approach resulting in rhythmically complex, harmonically rich, and melodically beautiful music-making. Singer José James—a true rising star—closes the afternoon with the power and tenderness of his extraordinary and seductive treatments of everything from jazz standards to soul to R&B and on…
2010 MacArthur ‘Genius’ Fellow recipient Jason Moran brings his intrepid trio—The Bandwagon—to close out the 2011 Caramoor Festival for a set that weaves myriad influences into the future of music—now. Legendary guitarist and innovator John Scofield and his quartet also summon stylistic diversity as they launch into their powerful improvisations—hold on… Columbian harpist Edmar Castaneda and his quartet open Sunday with a lush and unexpected journey that demonstrates how he is revolutionizing the perception of his instrument. One of the most brilliant pianists and composers of his generation, Fred Hersch teams up with Italian multi-reedist Nico Gori for deeply immersive and subtle music-making. The Robert Glasper Trio closes out the afternoon with an intricate set of hip-hop inflected originals.
Program to be announce from the stage. Caramoor is located at 149 Girdle Ridge Road in Katonah NY 10536. Box Office phone: (914) 232-1252 (and) hours: Monday-Friday 10am-4pm.

Paramount Center for the Arts SUMMER SUNDAYS
Opera in Cinema
3 PM Tickets: $15
Manon (Liceu)
Sunday, July 17, @ 3PM
Sunday, July 31 @ 3 PM
Performed at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona, Spain
Sung in French with English subtitles
2 hrs 55 mins plus one intermission
Massenet's passionate and tragic Manon stars three of today's operatic luminaries: Rolando Villazón as Chevalier Des Grieux, Samuel Ramey as his father, and the incomparable coloratura Natalie Dessay as Manon herself. From the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona.
Manon (1884) is Massenet's most popular and famous work and a veritable paradigm of French opera. Based on L'histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut by the Abbé Prévost (Amsterdam, 1731), it follows the original more closely than most other operas on the same topic. It tells the tale of two adolescents -an attractive young girl on her way to a convent and a provincial nobleman who has fallen madly in love with her- who elope to Paris. There life's harsh realities uncover their true characters. Manon is ambitious and yearns for comfort and luxury to the point of betraying her lover and prostituting herself. The weak, ingenuous Des Grieux, on the other hand, falls into a milieu of gambling and violence. In the novel Manon is deported to Louisiana and dies there in the arms of her repentant lover; in the opera this episode is reduced to Des Grieux's bid to free her on the quayside at Le Havre, where she expires from exhaustion.
Jules Massenet's Manon has a libretto by Henri Meilhac and Philippe Gille. It is an opéra-comique in five acts, divided into six scenes, and was premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in 1884. It triumphed from the very first night and has remained a paradigm of French opera, as was illustrated by the medallion to French opera which could be seen over the Liceu stage prior to the 1994 fire. It was first performed at the Liceu in 1894 and has been staged there 130 times in all.

Gordon Lightfoot
Sept. 30, 2011 at 8:00 pm
Gordon Lightfoot gained recognition in the mid-'60s as a songwriter when his songs "For Lovin' Me" and "Early Morning Rain" became hits for Peter, Paul & Mary, and Marty Robbins topped the country charts with "Ribbon of Darkness." It was not until the start of the '70s that he became a big success as a performer, scoring in 1970 with Sit Down Young Stranger, which contained his hit "If You Could Read My Mind," a song with a typically flowing melodic line and gently poetic lyrics.

Yorktown Stage - Little Shop of Horrors*
July 23 – 31, 2011
Sat 7/23: 1 pm & 8 pm. Sun 7/24: 1 pm.
Fri 7/29: 7:30 pm. Sat 7/30: 8 pm. Sun 7/31 :1 pm. 1974 Commerce Street, Yorktown Heights, NY
Tickets: Adults: $26, Yorktown Residents: $24
Seniors (62+) & Students (12-22): $21 Children (Under 12): $19 The hilariously creepy musical is based on the low-budget 1960 cult film. The catchy musical score, composed by Menken in the style of 1960's rock -‘n- roll, doo-wop and early Motown, includes several show-stoppers including "Skid Row," "Somewhere That's Green," and "Suddenly Seymour," as well as the title song “Little Shop of Horrors”.
Seymour Krelborn, a quintessential nerd who mops floors in Mr. Mushnik's failing skid row flower shop, is broke, shy, and hopelessly in love with Audrey. He begins to nurture a "strange and interesting new plant" which has the magical ability to draw in customers and also the attention of the girl of his dreams. But there's something very peculiar about the horticultural oddity - it thrives on the kind of plant food that is not always easily available - human blood! Soon the plant, grows into a giant, ill-tempered, R&B singing carnivore who offers Seymour fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite. It finally reveals itself to be an alien creature poised for global domination!
Anthony Malchar portrays the love-sick Seymour who risks all for the girl of his dreams, Audrey, played by Amanda Donaldson. The voracious plant will be brought to life by two performers. Puppeteer /designer, Bill Diamond will be encased in his foam rubber cocoon of a puppet every night swaying and lip-sinking as it rants, bellows & rocks out with the fabulously ominous voice of Peter McClung. Barry Liebman is the miserly florist shop owner, Mr. Mushnik. Michael Lichtstein will make us squirm in our seats as Audrey’s sadistic dentist boyfriend. Heather Abrado, Aliyah Hakim and Jocelyn Jones will be the Ronnettes, a skid row Greek chorus of sorts.
Produced by Barry Liebman, Directed by Pia Haas and C horeographed by Dorina DiLullo. Musical Direction by Chloe Sasson. Set Design by Peter Petrino, Lighting Design by Andrew Gmoser, Sound Design by Vinny Butler. Costumes by Anne Nisenholtz, Stage Management by Julia Ryan and Properties by Victor Lukas. Puppets built and operated by Bill Diamond Productions.
Little Shop of Horrors had its world premiere on May 6, 1982 at the WPA Theatre before settling into a long run at the Orpheum Theatre, opening July 27, 1982 and playing for 2209 performances Directed by Ashman, it won several awards including the 1982-1983 New York Drama Critics Circle Award, the Drama Desk Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, and the London Evening Standard Award, all for Best Musical. At closing, it was the third-longest running musical and the highest-grossing production in off-Broadway history.

HUDSON VALLEY SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL: NEW SEASON
This year The Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival is performing HAMLET, THE COMEDY OF ERRORS and AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS. The Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival began in 1987 with a modest outdoor production of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM performed under the stars in a meadow at Manitoga, industrial designer Russell Wright's home in Garrison, New York, fifty miles north of Manhattan. The modern dress show was virtually rained out of its four scheduled performances--except for the first two, which were given under wet drizzle. Patient audiences sat under their umbrellas on makeshift seats. After the second night the production moved to the local elementary school gym. Nevertheless, the show so enchanted those who saw it, including the late actress Helen Hayes and the Poughkeepsie Journal arts editor that a group of fans gathered and became the Festival's organizing committee. The group grew in size and helped see the organization through its next stage of applying for non-profit status and incorporation. The following year the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival was officially born.
Tickets are available through the HVSF Box Office at 845-265-9575 and are now available online at www.hvshakespeare.org. Discounts are available on most nights for groups, students, senior citizens and children 12 and under. The Festival offers several special packages, including a tour of the Boscobel mansion and Exhibition Gallery plus tickets. In addition discounts at local hotels and restaurants are also available. PERFORMANCES ELMWOOD PLAYHOUSE
THE FOREIGNER
Opening Friday, July 15th The Elmwood Playhouse will present THE FOREIGNER by Larry Shue, directed by Kathy Gnazzo. This award winning comedy is positively antic, yet pleasantly seasoned with dashes of sentimentality. Set in a fishing lodge in Tilghman County, Georgia it humorously explores how people perceive one another, their society and themselves. Performances on Fridays and Saturdays, July 15th through August 6th at 8 PM and on Sundays, 24th and 31st at 2 PM. A Thursday performance will be held on August 4th at 8 PM as well. Tickets are $21, Senior Citizens and Students (under 22 years) $18, except Sundays. Listening devises are available upon request. ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF AN ANARCHIST
By Dario Fo; Translated by Ed Emmery
Directed by Paul Mullins
August 3-28
Dario Fo’s brilliantly funny, scathing political farce embodies the modern Fo-brand of commedia theatre that has helped define him as a playwright of the people. The Nobel Prize Committee said of his work, “[he is a writer] who emulates the jesters of the Middle Ages in scourging authority and upholding the dignity of the downtrodden.” Inspired by a real-life event involving a man who “fell” from the window of a police station, Fo has invented an outrageously sly and caustic comedy filled with physical and linguistic acrobatics
OTHELLO
By William Shakespeare
Directed by Bonnie J. Monte
September 7 – October 2
Not seen on The Shakespeare Theatre stage since 2003, this tale of love,
jealousy, and betrayal remains as compelling today as when it first exploded
onto the stage in 1604. Often described as Shakespeare’s most perfect play,
the epic downfall of the Moor of Venice and his beautiful Desdemona at the hands of
the uber-villain Iago, remains one of the world’s most heartbreaking tales.
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
By Harper Lee; Adapted by Christopher Sergel
Directed by Joe Discher
October 12 – November 20
The characters of Atticus Finch, Scout, and Boo Radley have become iconic figures in the American consciousness and conscience. Harper Lee’s Pulitzer-prize winning novel is considered one of the most important works of the 20th century, and it is a must for every new generation. The story’s enduring spell stems in part from the juxtaposition of the simple, yet astute innocence of a child’s point of view in the face of terrible and terribly complex adult problems and biases. The fundamental lessons about compassion, integrity, and courage are breath-taking and life-changing.
Charles Dickens'
A CHRISTMAS CAROL
Adapted for the stage by Neil Bartlett
Directed by Bonnie J. Monte
December 1 – January 1
When The Shakespeare Theatre presented the East Coast premiere of Neil Bartlett’s unique and inventive adaptation of A Christmas Carol in 2007, audiences were thrilled by its ingenious new approach to this timeless holiday tale, and by how profoundly it captured the true essence of the original novel. With a cast of only nine actors, Ms. Monte will create a new incarnation of her acclaimed production with a totally redesigned visual landscape to help conjure
up this delightful, funny, dark, haunted and haunting morality tale, that in the end, is always beautifully touching. |
